Restoration Through Education

The Silichip Project

The Salmon and Steelhead Restoration Group has initiated the Silichip Project. This project will bring together many resources for providing a local environmental science education program. With a focus on Salmonid restoration it will also provide local schools with hands on environmental sciences and resources.

SSRG is working with the Institute for Fisheries Resources (IFR), California Academy of Sciences, The United Anglers of the South Bay and Pacific Coast Fisheries and Fisherman Association (PCFFA) to promote this program. Currently the Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose has expressed an interest in hosting a environmental sciences program with the local K-12 grade schools. They can provide a new technology approach to enviro-sciences with their genetic and bio-science programs.

Los Gatos High, Pioneer High and other schools have Salmonidae restoration hatching programs that requires harvesting eggs from, and returning fry to, rivers outside the local community. The Silichip Project would promote research of the local rivers and habitats by local students.
